Default Support Beam Question?

Wow, what a busy summer. I haven't been on for awhile. I appologize for that. I haven't even had a chance to drive the car this summer. I have done a complete rear end rebuild, with exeption to gears, they were ok. I rebushed everything w/graphit poly bushings. I also changed all the U-joints, everything is nice and clean. I ran into a bolt problem. So I have my brother replating alot of the bolts that are specialty bolts. The rest I was able to find new. What a load of work.

My question is: I am putting the chunk, and rearend cover w/x-member back in place. I see in the FSR that there is some type of sealant that is used on the trans, and chunk on reinstallation. Can anyone tell me if that is necessary, and what to use? Also, I removed the sound deadening from the beam will it be noisy, and have to be replaced? I guess that sums it up. Thanks, Tom

There are various opinions on the adhesive. Many of us run the beam without the adhesive and it's just fine. I've seen others use liquid nails on it.

I removed the sound deadener from mine also and did not replace it. I didn't notice a difference at all. No additional noise, vibrations, or anything.

I used liquid nails on mine. My original C-beam did not have sound deadening on it. But the replacement D44 beam did so I took it off (No Drama)

I left the sound deadnor material on the c-beam.The adhesive was very brittle. Not sure what the purpose for this stuff is. I guess it was meant to take away any relative movement in the connection at either end. I tightened the bolts a little more and did not apply any adhesive. So far, no problems.

Hmmmmmmmmm liquid nails. I know the factory stuff I removed had a tendency to remind me of liquid nails. I have to wonder its purpose...

To keep moisture, water, dirt, crap from getting between the diff and the beam and causing corrosion.

...or keep it from squeeking?

I was wondering about electrolysis. I'm only driving mine in the good months, but even then, I am bound to get caught in a rain storm, or drive through a puddle...

Hey, it's GM. You will always have some type of fluid leak that will migrate back and cover every component behind the engine. It's a love/hate relationship. I hate having to wipe up a slight film at every oil change but it is protecting my *** from corrosion.

I hear ya brother. I just refinished ever single part of the rear end assm. then to have it coated with oil, is frightening. I'm getting a hoist, and I vowed to my wife, I would keep the underside, as clean as the top. We'll see I guess...

If you drive where they 'salt' the roads in snow conditions then please do put ANY kind of RTV (silicone) sealant between C beam and diff. and between C beam and tranny. Actually I would do it anyway

Buy a set of beam plates from ZFdoc.

Had this discussion with a GM engineer several years ago. Basically it's caulk. It's used to prevent squeaking due to driveline movement.

The "sound deadner" addresses a resonance issue at certain rpms. Once people start modifying their cars (exhaust and such) it's really not applicable.
