Default A/C Compressor

My A/C compresson on my 90 has sprung a leak, the lub leaked out and is now a mess on the garage floor. Two questions: 1) do I still have the refregrent or if the lub leaks out does the refregrent go to? and 2) how hard are the seals to replace on the compressor, is it a job the average shade tree mechinanic (otherwise know as Bubba) can do at home?

You have lost the refrigerant if the oil leaked out. You will need to determine the location of the leak first. The o rings that are on the back of the compressor (where the lines connect) are easy to change. If it is leaking from inside the compressor just buy a new or rebuilt compresor. Make sure to change the orrifice tube as well and maybe the evaporator. You will also need to decide which refrigerant you will use r12=expensive, r134a= doesn't cool as good, blends=some compatibility problems.

I checked some prices and The Last Detail has the compressor for about $450 while Carparts.com has it for about $650. But Carparts.com has a "shaft seal kit" for $15. Was hoping that it could be something easy to fix.
