New to forum and new vette owner (89 coupe). MidAmerica has a Corsa cat back exhaust system for $800. Questions: Why have other forum posts indicated that a corsa system costs close to $2000? How much, if any, horsepower gain from this system? Legal in California? How hard is it to install? I have very few mechanical skills or tools and my Wrenching knowledg is limited to a few mods on my motorcycles.
Thanks for the reply, flyboy. Others here have indicated that magnaflows create a lot of resonance. Don't know if that would bother me or not but I can only afford to do this once so I will probably go with the Corsa system if it's only $800 and Ca. will allow this mod.
I don't know about 2 grand... most prices I've seen have been around 1000-1200. If you have found one for 800 I would ****** it up.
Install is easy... Stock exhaust comes down in one piece...Corsa bolts right up.
Its 50 state legal.
There are a few posts about various cat back exhausts on this site.... Not everyone thinks they all sound good...
Some people bitch about resonance with their non Corsa system, wind up selling it and buying a Corsa....... some people (I think are deaf) say its not an issue with their non Corsa system.
You can read these posts till your eyes fall out..... The one thing that floats to the surface of all the BS is ...
The Corsa system ain't got no resonance.............Edit-I've got one on my 92, I like the way it sounds @ idle and WOT
Best to listen before you buy... If possible

I got the $800. price from the midamerica website. Under c4 exhausts is part #628-096. This is for an 86-91. The product picture looks like it includes mufflers so I assume it does. I may be missing something here. I'm pretty ignorant about these things yet. The Ca. illegal issue I was reading about may have pertained to headers and not cat back exhaust systems. I'm still trying to sort all this stuff out. Wish there was a mod primer for newbie idiots like me .
The search feature at the top will help tremendously...
Use Advanced search
type in what ya' want(ie: cat back)
Click on a catagory on the right-- in this case c4 tech.
Wait very impatiently and you should get results in 7- 10 days with frequent watering

We were all newbies once, had a Corvette shop recently (March) install hooker headers with all the emissions connections and a Corsa duel exhaust, and I absolutely love the sound and the look. Hope you will be as happy also. You are not going to recieve hp gains until you can free up the restrictive exhaust, (headers) and intake, (TPI).

You're pricing the L98 version. It doesn't have a resonator and so is cheaper. Actually I've seen them for under $700. The LT1/4 version is a bit higher. I don't believe I've seen one of them for under a grand for quite some time now. Besides also having a resonator, it has more pipe too. I got the L98 version and used it on my LT1. This is because all I really wanted were the mufflers and rear sections of pipe.
Kid, where did you see the L98 corsa cat back for under $700? Midamerica was out of them anyway. I just spent some time looking at catback posts in the advanced search section of this forum (thanks Powerdrive) and answered some of my questions. The cat back install seems simple enough but replacing the stock cat with a high flow cat seems a bit more challenging. Would a high flow cat give me any hp gains at this point or can that be done at a later date with the installation of new headers? I don't mind doing things in stages as long as I don't have to undo or redo what I've already done.
I have been trying to decide between the Corsa and Magnaflow systems for my '88. The best price I've currently found on the Corsa is $735 at LMPerformance. Looks like the Magnaflow system can be had for $558 with a free Magnaflow high flow cat at Hottexhaust....
Anything can be done. If you go with the Corsa or any other exhaust I would recommend a high flow cat to go with it. It makes a big difference and if your cat is bad or is on it's way out you could damage your new exhaust

disagree
Do the cats when you do the headers..... you wont pick up any significant HP with just the exhaust... Or the cats... Your real power increase comes when you put on some long tubes, and thats when the best time to do the cats will be.
Even if your cats go bad, you will not damage a Corsa system...
Its straight through... You will just blow the $h!t out the back.
Stage 1 cat back
stage 2 Long tubes and cats

Check ebay. I found a Magnaflow there that I got for $485 shipped to my door. I'm also running headers and I think it sounds and looks great. One of the best looking systems I've seen on a C4.
I want to thank everyone for the replies and advice. I feel like I know a lot more now than I did before I asked these questions. I'm leaning toward the Corsa cat back for now with new headers and a high flow cat in the future. Since I live in California are after market headers even possible? Seems like I read here that they won't pass the visual part of the smog test and there is a huge fine if caught tampering with the oem emmisions stuff.
