Default 1990 L98 Cam Suggestions?

Hi Guys
I'm looking for some suggestions as to which cam you might recommend for a 1990 - L98, I want to keep the stock TPI and heads, I have true dual exhaust with no cat and magna flow's and 100 shot of N20. I want the cam to be a little lumpy at idle but not too crazy. Any thoughts or set-up recomendations?

Crane compu-cam sells a few mild grinds for what youre looking for.Maybe check out their sites and see if they have what you want.It is said you can see a 25-40 HP gain depending on cam selection...but thats a "said" claim.

Most of the aftermarket cams, whatever grinds, are going to push your power band from 2000,2500 rpms - drop off.May make the car feel a bit slower off the line but will pull better in the mid range.

Keep in mind the TPI system is built for low rpm to about 4500 where it falls flat out of power and goes down from there. Its hard to change the way the engine pulls with a better cam with the TPI to where you might say OMG I can see/feel/sotp difference!

This is basic info..Im sure alot of the other guys will post what they see and felt worked best.I used a crane compucam 2030 in my former Vette and it pulled alot harder to rpm fall off, under 5K than the stock cam did.It had a mild lope, not everyone noticed it and passed emissions too.

I feel for your application,a mild LPE cam grind would work well with your mods.It will need a custom prom done, which is easy to get done through some people online.I say this a bit over the crane compucam if you dont have emissions needed and can benefit from more lift and cam.

May I suggest the Crane Powermax 2040. It is computer friendly and with 1.6-1 roller tips you'll definately see significant gains and still run the stock computer.

If you are on a budget , can't go past the GM ZZ4 cam.
$130 new crate motor take outs on eBay.
Muscle car idle sound and works nice with TPI. Great street drivibility

Cam/ headers/ no cat/ home ported TPI =12.9 ET

I believe you might be referring to the LPE/Accel 211/219 cam (#74211), ground for stock or near-stock long runnered TPI.

To the OP:

the 2030 is close to what you already have. The 2040 is a nice improvement. Of course it is flat tappet and just learned my lesson on how important breakin is. After learning what I have in the last few weeks it's probably the best bang for your buck. If its within your budget think about converting to a hydralic roller. Even though I just did mine I am going to convert it next spring.

Stay with a well known hydraulic roller cam. Keep life simple.

I almost forgot about this...he DOES have a rollercam block in his '90.
So he can use get a cam desgined for that without an expensive conversion.

Keep the lift below .470, the stock heads don't build power past that lift so going past that point is useless. Get a cam that is going to keep the valve open longer at the lower .450 lift. Try something on the order of a 212-218 intake duration. Make it a split cam too as the exhaust blows nuts and you should keep that valve open longer than the intake.

just because the head stalls around .500 lift doesn't mean that you will not have any gain by going with more lift..

Has anybody tried what LT4 Hot cam or LPE 219 do in a L98 with large tube runners + big mouth or SR base and stock heads with 1.6 RR's?

Actual experiences please.
