Took a drive (to get some beer) last week, I had to go about 20 miles (one of the benefits of living in a state with dry counties). It was the first hot day we'd had this year (96 degrees). The A/C would not come back on after I left the liquior store (NO, the car ain't hardshell Babtist). I got home and raised the hood and the A/C clutch wasn't coming on.
After about 3 hours it did just fine, worked like it was supposed to. I've checked the codes in the A/C control and got none. I haven't driven it much since (that's gonna change this week).
Any ideas? could the freon be just a little low? and not set the low freon code? Maybe a intermiten bad high side switch?
Absent a low gas code or seized compressor or just a blown fuse or some other electrical issue, the compressor is activated by a Relay and that juice flows through the Low Pressure Switch which opens the circuit when the Low side drops below 22.5 to 25 psi (depends on what gas is in it). It shouldn't do that on a 96 degree day, so I'd suspect something with this Switch or the Relay. And the problem on these years always seems to be a loose or poor connection at the Switch. Remove and reinstall the harness - wriggle it around - hold it firmly to the Switch and see if that doesn't make it come on. You can also jumper the connector with a paperclip; ie, complete the circuit and see what it does, but first, make sure the Switch contacts are closed (and they should be if it's got anything in it) by putting your meter across it's terminals. If you can't get anywhere this way and the Switch contacts are closed, I'd throw 5 or 9 Bucks at a new relay, though you might first disconnect and reconnect the battery to make sure there isn't some memory glitch messing things up. Oh - the Switch you want is on the Evaporator outlet - Big pipe at the top, right hand side of the Firewall.
I've been busy the last couple of weeks. I looked at the switch you mentioned, ain't sure where it is. My 94 LT1 has a couple of plugs on the heater (evap) housing next to the firewall. The large freon return line does not have any electicial plugs that I can see.
I assume you are talking about the two plugs located on the housing. One is a 2 connector plug and the other one has about 4 wire coming out of it.
I've got a factory manuel, I haven't been able to find a picture of the switch and relay. I've found the schematics, but the color of the wires are not the same as listed, so I guess I'm looking at the wrong switch and relay.
The A/C is working now, but, I'd like to be able to figure out what's wrong if it happens again. Thanks for any help.
