Total Break down......
It would be helpful if you suggested some goals for the project. My impression is that you want a nice street car, some more power and a little better handling.
Suspension - before going crazy try updating your bushings to polyurethane. Put stiffer shocks on. Upgrade the spring last, or go to a coil over set-up
Motor - how much HP do you want? Here's a tried and true recipe for 425 to 450 CRANK HP:
- Corvette 350 LT1 with flattop pistons. (Stock components will work)
- LT1 Alum. Heads that flow over 260cfm/intake, 190 cfm/exhaust. (Pretty easy to achieve with stock heads through CNC or hand porting by a pro)
- 1.75" Full length headers with dual 2.5" exhaust and hi-flow mufflers.
- Relatively large camshaft with at least 236 degrees of duration @ .050" and .550" to .585" lift, depending on the ported head's limit. (With no emissions and decent exhaust this can be a single pattern cam with 110 or 112 degree LSA)
- 52mm or larger throttle body
- 24lb to 30lb injectors, depending on who programs/tunes your PROM.
- .029" headgasket to get 10.75-11.0:1 compression, depending on final combustion chamber size after head porting/milling.
- MSD 6A or 'bigger' and a full-size coil for top end spark energy.
There are several "while you're in there" mods I'd also recommend if you're going to pull the motor:
- Electric waterpump
- Aluminum flywheel
- Upgraded clutch (Carolina clutch makes nice parts for 'vettes)
- Canton or Melling baffled hi capacity oil pan
- New motor mounts
- Lightweight harmonic balancer pulley
- Dual core aliminum radiator
- Engine oil cooler (or you can get an aluminum radiator with an integrated oil cooler)
There is so much more but I can't think of it all right now...
Transmission - the stock ZF6 is a fantastic part. You don't need to change it for less than about 600 CHP.
Rear Gear - swap in a 4.10 for neck snapping off-the line performance, or if you're really going to add power stick with a 3.55 or 3.73 as a 4.10 is very tall...
Brakes - don't forget brakes! Many people upgrade to the C5 brakes with the handy kit. There are also many Brembo and Wilwood kits available for top performance. They cost around $2500.
