I'm not pete, but to my knowledge, the 4l60 is electronically controlled versus the 700r4 being mechanically controlled. If you need to have either transmission rebuilt, it requires the same rebuild kit.

The 700r4 is a non electronic transmission. It received improvements each and every model year. Approximately 1989 or so, gm changed the name of the 700r4 to the 4l60.
The 4l60e is a fully electronic trans that required a powertrain control module to function. Although the 4l60e did evolve from the 4l60(they share most of the geartrain), they are 2 completely,different non interchangable transmissions.

According to the book (helms FSM), my 93 has a 4L60. Not sure what year they went to the "e".
