The Dana 44 differenital clutches are slipping in our Dana 44 at the track. The car runs 7.91 in the 1/8th with a 1.74 60 ft time. The Dana is was a rebuilt unit purchased earlier this year. Any recomondations on the best way to repair this? Better clutches available? I don't want to damage the differential, or axles by doing a one wheel burn out.
When mine started doing one wheel burn outs I ordered a new posi unit from Randy's Ring and Pinion and had it installed in my Dana 44...since I had to crack the diff anyway I also bought new 3:73 gears and had them installed at the same time...
The Diff. has less then 3000 miles on it. But has many 1/8th mile passes, and a few autocrosses. Run drag radials at the strip. When the car is up on the hoist, it is very easy to turn one wheel, and watch the other turn the opposite direction. I would not think the oil should be bad this early. Am I wrong?
I have never seen a rebuild(clutch/steel replacement) not fix the slippage. Your problem is odd. I wonder if there is a crack in the diff, or something else going on.
I would say that something is wrong with the carrier and is causing the unit to bind up....I had one a long time ago lock where it acted like a spool (locking both wheels).
Lastly what is making you think its slipping? Do you get two burnout marks when you leave hard? Or just pegleg?
Can I just replace the clutches? I don't see anyone selling them. Or must I purchase a complete differerential. I am sure the clutches are worn because of how easy it is to turn the one tire when it is up on the hoist. I know when it was first installed I could not turn one wheel at all. And yes. During the burn out often one wheel starts spinning, then the other one starts some time later. Not a good thing for the differential, or the axles.

Or is it for sure its the clutches from its behavoir?
Remember this: the differential additive you have to put in when you change diff lubricant is for the LSD clutches. If you don't put this additive in (or not enough) you may get excessive slippage of the Posi-Traction unit.
Plates are available separately. But...
If you have to take the rear end apart, I'd see if there is a Detroit Locker or a Torsen unit available for the D44. They work much better on a race car than a limited slip unit.
The clutch pack IS available separately. Part number 707019X. That number may be superseded by now. It came from a 1993 book.
A Detroit Locker is not possible for this rear end. There would be no way to install the "C" clips for the half shaft, yoke shafts. I think the same problem prevents the use of the Torsen, also.

Last year I got a clutch kit for my Dana 36 from Ikerds. Great service from them. Mine had a bad conical washer or plate that caused the problem(CFI EFI knows the technical name for it). I was flat and not holding pressure on the clutches. It comes in the kit for around $100.
