My '86 is only used for autocross and an infrequent track session. The OD unit is disabled via removal of the overdrive relay. Can the water cooling lines be permanently removed without causing any issues. I am installing a better oil pan and I thought about removing the overdrive water cooling lines while I was at it.
I am also posting this in the autocross and racing forum.
Thanks.
The internal pump doesn't stop running if the OD unit is not engaged. Removal of the ATF fluid lines may very well cause the OD to weld itself together in a short period of time.
The lines route ATF to and from the radiator in the same fashion as a car equipped with an automatic tranny. The lines connect to a tube inside one of the radiator end tanks and coolant circulates around this tube in turn cooling the ATF.
As long as the ATF is fresh (Dexron II/III) and you have a clean filter, the OD unit should survive hard use if it's not engaging/disengaging.
