Gents,

As a manufacturer’s representative with 25 years experience in the internal engine parts market, and having a working knowledge of the Melling Tool Company, I can confirm to you that Melling did indeed redesign their SBC family of pumps not long ago. The pump castings were lightened approx 10%. The original casting is still produced, and used on the much more expensive M Select Series pumps. This change affected the entire SBC family of pumps, M55, 55HV, 55A, 55AHV, 155 & 155HV. You decide if this change was a GM mandate or not. My question is what current production GM engine utilizes a M55 pump?

An equally important, but more subtle change, is the elimination of the cavity in the mounting boss of the oil pump. This cavity mates to the cavity in the main cap creating a reservoir which helps to eliminate oil pressure fluctuations and volume spikes, especially at idle. Interestingly, this cavity still exist on Melling’s M Select Series pumps. Again, you decide, is this a new and improved Melling design or another process elimination and cost savings event.

Alternatives do exist. Melling’s design changes encouraged several companies to enter the market. Schumann’s Oil Pumps, Blue Grass Iowa, has been manufacturing a short line of performance oil pumps since 2004. Verne Schumann , a Senior Member of the SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers), has designed and produced a superior oil pump with features not found on a Melling pump. Schumann’s pumps are available through a hand full of distributors nationwide, one of those distributors being Central High Performance Warehouse in Lexington, NC. (800-222-6805)

Standard features on a Schumann SBC OE replacement pump include:

*) full flow shaft oiling
*) anti aeration bleed off
*) high strength , high density, vibration cast, heat treated castings.
(70,000 PSI casting vs. Melling’s 35,000 PSI casting)
*) Drilled cap screw (not a pressed pin) for easy spring change. Allows
spring change without removing pump from engine.
*) Correct pre-positioned 50/55 PSI relief spring
*) Exact mesh gear set to housing, and precision tolerance machining
yields highest idle pressure.
*) Mounting bolt neck to housing is 150 grams heavier than Melling’s
(strongest in the industry)
*) Extra long bolts accommodate aftermarket performance bolt on screen
assemblies.

For nearly the same price as a Melling pump, (ok, maybe a few bucks more), you can get a superior quality pump. Schumann offers 13 levels of SBC pumps, starting at the above mentioned OE replacement pump and culminating with a low volume drag race pump, featuring a 40 PSI by pass, full anti-cavitation treatment, 1” low volume gears and many other features, the most important being its nowhere near the cost of a billet pump. SB Ford pumps are also available. The Pro Series Ford pump features the only gear pressure balanced Gerotor assembly available in the market place today.

You can verify my statements by searching out the following publications:

Engine Builder Magazine: Jan 2004 page 50, Aug 2005 page 43, March 2007 page 68-69

Performance Racing Industry Magazine: April 2005 page 52, Feb 2007 page 104

Two other manufacturers have introduced cast housing oil pumps as well, Milodon and Moroso. However, you will not find a better quality oil pump with as many features as the Schumann pump anywhere at any price.

Oh yes, one more thing, NO DISCLAIMERS ARE IN THE SCHUMANN BOX. THESE PUMPS ARE MADE FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE APPLICATIONS.

Hope this helps.
