On my '89 to jack up one side, I jack it about a hands width back from the side mirrors, that seem to be the balance point for me. Been doing it that way for over 4 years now, about 20 or so times a year with no problems for me. If you do it to yours, make sure you don't go in to far and catch the floorboard, that would be bad. Also, my jack has a pretty wide saddle with a heavy rubber pad on it. Do at your own risk.

Pucks work great on the jack stands....to help with marks, but nothing works better than safety.... first.....

I agree with the one side at a time jacking from the middle nascar style with hockey pucks on the jack. I was skeptical at first but I'm a lot more comfortable doing that then I ever was using the marked points doing a corner at a time.

Great pic Casey,

Those are some odd looking jack stands! Are they the norm in OZ?

The norm here is:

Nah mate they are some ive had for about 8 years, pin type units. They aint the sh*t, ill be getting some racheting units when i get around to it.

Ive spent $1,800 the past 8 months on tools and equipment for working the car, so the stands ive got can stay for a while. Here is a pic of part of my rolling workshop for ya:

Ok pin type.

I guess I Jacked this thread!

I've used the crossmember to lift the front and with a block of wood under the spring mount I've lifted the rear.

I usually end up lifting the rear in order to get the jack under the side of the car. Mine is too low for a jack to roll under. If I plan ahead I'll drive the car up on a couple of two by fours so that I can get a jack under the side.

Looking at these nice "little" hooks worrys me a little. Many, many, many years ago I drove a wrecker. Most flat beds use these huge hooks that won't fit in those nice little hook holes. Might I suggest buying a pair of heavy duty straps that will utilize those hooks and allow the operator to use. Painting the hooks is a great idea, but I'd use a paint that will reflect because Murphy's Law says you'll only need them at night and a flashlight will be needed to find them.

For jacking I use the attachment to the jack that allows you to jack the Vette from the differential. It's shaped like an "I" and has a piece welded on it to slip into the jack hole where the cradle is. It raises both rear wheels nicely. I have a vert and I boxed the "X" frame and this allows me to jack using the X frame, but I only use the ends near the outer edge and only use this as a last resort.

The front is just like the article says, you're using the place where all the seams are connected and the hockey puck works great. When I use jack stands, which is not very often, I jack the Vette up using a 2 foot piece of channel iron on my jack lifting the "K" member. Then placing the stands on the spot shown in the article where the seams comme together.

I know, clear as mud. But I tried.

the key to painting them is simple - if nothing else the OWNER knows the hooks are there.

A couple years ago, about the time I did that tech tip, I worked on a guys vette and did u-joints on it. there was no doubt in my mind that the car had been towed. The lower left rear trailing link (the one from the lower part of the upright to the center, where the rear is aligned) had to have been used as a sinch point for a flat bed.

I got the inspiration for this tech tip when my wifes 87 tossed a belt and had to be towed home. I got there as the tow arrived. The operator was ready to toss the hook around the rear lower control arm when I stopped him. He had no idea that there were hooks on these cars... and I wonder how many others he sinched this way?

I like the idea of additional straps. However, I haven't seen a hook that won't fit through. Then again, I haven't had my Vette towed in like 2 years. Does that mean I am jinxing myself???

I have seen the little adaptor, I think it's a product of the Corvette Gadget Man.

The jack in the tech tip is an AC Hydraulic. That is one serious jack! It is one of the rare units (much like Casey's) that can lift from the middle... mainly cause it can get under there.

Those seam points are perfect. I haven't had any problems using them - and that goes back 7 years!
