There is always this failure talk when coilovers come up, but I have never seen any proof? pic
side note: I do think the shocks support some weight. My car started getting lower as the shocks wore out, when I got mine revalved, and to a higher setting, the car raised up over an inch. So it must support some weight, right?
Anyway, I think coilovers are good if you want to race or corner weight your car, adjust the ride height equally, lower more than you can with cutting bushings, and the ability to change springs easily.
I think the people that are getting better ride quality are getting softer and/or adjustable shocks, and/or softer springs, and this is contibuting to most of the ride improvement.
After getting my shocks revalved my ride quality went from OK to very rough, same springs, same big sway bars.

The dynamic force on the factory shock towers depends entirely on the speed the shock moves, and can be huge under certain circumstances, as I mentioned before. The force exerted by the shock is about
F = b * V
where b is the damping coefficient, and V is the velocity. Our shocks are a little more complex than that, and have variable damping, but that's beyond the intelligence of this thread.
The static force a shock puts on the tower is inconsequential. Gas shocks will lift the car (1" sounds excessive), because they hold the fluid under pressure. You can also easily lift the front of the car slightly by hand.
I think I'll stick with my stock springs though. If I can't drive well enough to find their limitations, then why the hell would I upgrade? If you want a fast car that is more responsive and stable, then spend that $1600 on track rentals.
