I have been thinking of either removing my pre cats or gutting my main cat and leaving the pre cats, which would be most benificial and would the car remain emmisions legal?
If you have smog *****, then your best bet is to go straight back pipes (dual) off of each manifold into two high flow cats and eliminate the pre cats. Of course, changing the cats without them being broke is a 'crime' unto itself.
If no tests, just go with dual pipes back from the manifolds to the mufflers. MAD has a nice SS setup. Headers are even better.
currently i don't have to deal with smog ****'s, one benifit of living in a rural town :D, i am looking at a set of full length headers into two high flow cats, the car has 50,000 on it now so it would be "legal" to change them. I will have to look at mad because i didn't see anything i really liked from ecklers or corvette central
If you do not have to deal with the smog ****'s, then I would recommend that you go the following route:
1. Put on long tube coated headers
2. Go with the MAD 'Dual pipe' off road setup and have them cut and welded to your header's collector adapters.
I found that I got the dreaded code 32 - EGR, when I 86ed the cats. Lack of back pressure. However, a set of full length Hookers and the code went away - permanently.
I also highly recommend a heated O2 sensor if you move the bung back towards the collector. There is a write up in the tech section for the particulars.
The sound is sweet and the performance is great. :yesnod:
Lose the pre-cats by replacing the front Y-pipe or installing a set of long tube headers. As for gutting the cat I'm going to call the ASPCA on you! :D
