I took the fuse panel cover out of my car..i wet sanded with some 800 grit , 3 coats of satin black, 3 coats or clear, i wet sanded with 1500 then used some polishing compound, then i waxed it..its super smooth and looks like glass. best part is it wont ever need any armour-all to be shiny.
because im going to do the entire interior i was using the fuse panel as a test piece, genius. I could spend over a grand on all the interior plastic, or 30 bucks on paint and some work.
Thats a great tip and I think he's onto something.
Ever see a replacement panel? Its a milky black greyish color..they dont look anything like the originals.
I painted all my dash trim with GM metallic black paint since the old panels were peeling and etc, it came out real nice.
I didnt clear it or polish so i bet that would make them shine better.
Another good thing about painting them..you can use a good polish or wax on them once in a while and they shine for months.I chose a wax once that didnt leave a white residue powder and it worked great.
They also dust off with one stroke of the duster..no messy greasy armor all anymore.
:)

YIKES! Bad tip!!!
You don't sand your interior for 1 main reason- SILICONE. If you or a previous owner got ANY silicone on that piece, then sanding it will just imbed it in its surface!!!
Steps of dying are this-
Wash with soap and water (and scrub)
Then PREP IT with a Silicone/Grease/Oil Remover
THEN you can dye or sand or whatever you want to do after that.
If you dont remove the silicone, grease, and oil, then you will have orange peel within a month or so. You use armor all which is 100% Silicone practically.... Armor All is HORRIBLE for your interior. Use a protectant that uses NO SILICONE.
Armor all is Silicone. Silicone doesn't protect from the sun. Silicone traps in heat from the surface of the dash. Silicone is a painter's worst nightmare (quote from Tech-Tips- dying vinyl) And on an appearance note- It is greasy, attracts dust, and gives it an unnatural look.
The best protectant I have ever found is 303 Aerospace Protectant. It runs at a ridiculous $12.95 per spray bottle, but it is WELL worth it. It has a UV40 block in it, and it contains no grease, oil, or silicone.
i did clean and degrease first, i figured that was a given and i wouldnt have to post it, what idiot would paint dirty pieces anyway. So far ive done most of the vinyl in the car, and im going to start on the dash tonight
Make sure you use a special desilicon product first. If you wash it and scrub it and it looks squeeky clean, it still has loads of silicon if someone used armorall just once. See the tech briefing in the tech tips section. There is a special technique to getting the silicon off. If you don't do it, no amount of cleaning, sanding, etc will help. Could be a definite trick and not a treat.
