i'll be replacing the valve seals on my '85 this winter. any suggestions on whats the latest and greatest??? i seem to think that gm had a retro kit for L98s - has anyone used it, or is there something better out there??? TIA
I had the guides cut for ps teflon seals while the heads were out. this is the seal that most people preferr but you have to cut the guide down to .530 .
There are few types of seal to use. There are the Viton types of seal, these are good seal, and are cheap. You can get them from Felpro and other mfg's.
The other type I like are the one that came on LT1's and LT4's. I've got a 96' so i don't know what year they were implemented, but there design is supposed to be even better that the viton seal. These are pretty cheap at GM to. They have a metal shell with rubber/teflon bonded to the inside were it contact the valve stem and guide.
Are you sure they have teflon on the valve stem riding surface? I know I have seen some postitve seals that were a composite assembly with a black outside and white teflon riding surface. I looked at the GM performance seals for both the ZZ series P/N 460483 = $3.35 each, and the LT4 series P/N 10212810 = 1.50 each. Both of these seals did not have a white teflon insert. They were all black postive type with a spring securing the valve stem, and the lower half metal, slippping over the guide. From what I saw, the Perfect Circle (Clevite) Fluoroelastomer seals were a better product, NAPA P/N 216-1143. The PCs did not have the teflon insert either. I know PC makes an ALL teflon seal that is all white.
Has anyone else seen this composite seal I am talking about?
