Default [1985] A/C compressor

Can they be rebuilt by a shop? Has anyone here done that with success?

My dad is restoring his oldsmobile and getting the accessories off of that rebuilt one by one. They come back looking and working like new. Can I do the same with the R4 compressor off of my '85? I'd prefer that over a reconditioned unit.

I've been delaying this project again and again because everytime I settle on which place to get an R4 compressor I end up finding bad reports about that brand or company. So now I'm wondering if this is an option.

TIA

Just about all you can get now in R-4's are rebuilt. They were not very good to begin with. About the best advice is to make sure you have a good warrantee, and get the one with the new clutch. Good time to go with R-134.

I bought a new R4 compressor, but they're so damn common I'm sure you could get it repaired cheap.

I didn't see any reason to go to R134a, stuck with R12 at $20/can ($6in mexico).

Thanks guys, I'll probably go the route of having mine rebuilt. I just wanted to make sure that I could- I didn't wanna sound like an idiot when I went to the shop to ask about it.

And I'm still debating the R12 vs. R134a... another reason that i've been putting this project off for months. But that's another thread topic altogether.

Stick with the R-12!

Check over here and ask about your rebuild job.

Yeah I've been reading there for a year or so now... I think I'm starting to get a pretty good understanding of this system.

I still am undecided between R12 and R134a. It'll be a new system, so I have no committment to either.
