Default Good performance list for a LT4?

As most of you know.... I am going to be buying a LT4 convertible, and should be getting one VERY soon. In the meantime, I have been planning what performance mods I want. Here is the current list:

Ed Wright Programming

3.73:1 Gears

B&B Tri-Flo Cat-Back Exhaust System (The best performance-wise w/ 3" tubing. Power Effects/Borla are only 2 3/4")

BBK High-Performance Twin 52mm Throttle Body

CAGS Eliminator

Granatelli Mass Air Flow Sensor (I think this might be good w/ the SLP and the BBK Throttle Body, and it couldn't HURT)

Hooker Ceramic Coated Shorty Headers (not long tubes, because I want to stay legal w/ Catalytic Converters).

Hurst Shifter

160 Degree Theromostat

Jacob’s Energy Core Spark Plug Wires

SLP "Claw" Cold Air Intake (Would get Forced Air, but I like the looks of this better)

Throttle Body Coolant Bypass

What are your thoughts on this? Any additions, comments, or substitutions?

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Personally I would go with a B&M shifter and MSD wires. But that's just me. Not trying to start a shifter & plug wire argumnet. Just my $.02 Any way you slice it, it's still a Vette.

BTW, ED Wright disables C.A.G.S. on his chips, making the eliminator redundant. By taking it out of the computer you get rid of the annoying skip shift light at the same time.

Ed Wright Programming,
or do it yourself.

3.73:1 Gears
with cam change

B&B Tri-Flo Cat-Back Exhaust System (The best performance-wise w/ 3" tubing. Power Effects/Borla are only 2 3/4")
for sound only

CAGS Eliminator
let Ed do this one in the computer

Hurst Shifter

160 Degree Theromostat

Throttle Body Coolant Bypass

Here's my recommended list.

As most of you know.... I am going to be buying a LT4 convertible, and should be getting one VERY soon. In the meantime, I have been planning what performance mods I want. Here is the current list:
Ed Wright Programming

Good program for a typical car unless you drive there and dyno tune.
3.73:1 Gears
My vote is for 4.10 gears. 3.73 are minimum.
B&B Tri-Flo Cat-Back Exhaust System (The best performance-wise w/ 3" tubing. Power Effects/Borla are only 2 3/4")
Power Effects has actually made the most power according to mag reviews. Remember, bigger is not always better. Exhaust is the least understood science in automotive land. :)
BBK High-Performance Twin 52mm Throttle Body
Lots have problems with quality, lots don't. I like the AS&M ones. Good Luck,
CAGS Eliminator
Will be taken care of with you programming.
Granatelli Mass Air Flow Sensor (I think this might be good w/ the SLP and the BBK Throttle Body, and it couldn't HURT)
The stock TB will flow enough air for around 500 RWHP. This is not a bottleneck!!!

Hooker Ceramic Coated Shorty Headers (not long tubes, because I want to stay legal w/ Catalytic Converters).
I really like the SLP stainless ones for the shorties. Better fit and plug access.
Hurst Shifter
Some like the B&M, some like the Hurst. I have not driven the Hurst yet, but I have two with a B&M and I LOVE them.
160 Degree Theromostat
Good idea
Jacob’s Energy Core Spark Plug Wires
I like the Taylors. The only time I tried the Jacobs, I have bunches of trouble.
SLP "Claw" Cold Air Intake (Would get Forced Air, but I like the looks of this better)
This will work about the same as a cut air lid and a K&N, but it does look cool. I have one on my car and I get comments every time I pop the hood. :)
Throttle Body Coolant Bypass
Good idea
What are your thoughts on this? Any additions, comments, or substitutions?
Heads and cam are the ulitmate is performance! There is no substitute. It will make it feel like you just bought a whole new car(even though you are). :)

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Let me know if there is anything that I can help you with. :)

Ed Wright Programming
Best to get it Dyno tuned there if you have to have someone do it for you.

3.73:1 Gears
4.11's if you are not going to add a power adder!

B&B Tri-Flo Cat-Back Exhaust System (The best performance-wise w/ 3" tubing. Power Effects/Borla are only 2 3/4")
Corsa rocks!

BBK High-Performance Twin 52mm Throttle Body
I would go with the AS&M or the Holley unit, but I liked my 52mm BBK when I had it.

CAGS Eliminator
Easy enough to just unplug it from underneath.

Granatelli Mass Air Flow Sensor (I think this might be good w/ the SLP and the BBK Throttle Body, and it couldn't HURT)
Waste of money and it will make your program run rich unless it is compensated for. Ed Wright asks you to put the stock one back on from what I have read. I run the stock MAF still with the screens. I have not found it to be a restriction yet.

Hooker Ceramic Coated Shorty Headers (not long tubes, because I want to stay legal w/ Catalytic Converters).
You can stay legal with long tubes, but you have to have the exhaust modified by a shop and have aftermarket cats installed. Shorties are easy if you want to keep it as a do it yourself-er.

Hurst Shifter
Ripper Rules!

160 Degree Theromostat
Good choice.

Jacob’s Energy Core Spark Plug Wires
Go with Taylors. Best bang for the buck.

SLP "Claw" Cold Air Intake (Would get Forced Air, but I like the looks of this better)
I run a cut air lid with a K&N and it works fine. Like ChrisK said, it looks cool though. I am looking to go to a ram air setup of some kind next year.

Throttle Body Coolant Bypass
Good choice.

I have been using Tuner Cat but he doesn't support the 96 ECM. Go to this website. http://www.carputing.com/. They sell an editor for the 96 OBDII ECM. I notice the price for one car is $550 which is  I went with tuner cat because it was a lot cheaper and could be used on multiple ECMs and not limited to one car.

Go to this link to get more info on FI tuning. They also have a forum for efi turning. http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml

There is more info on the parameters that you can set in the ECM. http://www.baylor.edu/~Christopher_Bennight/LT1Edit.htm

As most of you know.... I am going to be buying a LT4 convertible, and should be getting one VERY soon. In the meantime, I have been planning what performance mods I want. Here is the current list:

Ed Wright Programming

(TAKE the car to ed and let him tune it on his dyno.)

3.73:1 Gears

(no way big mistake, you want 4.10 here)

B&B Tri-Flo Cat-Back Exhaust System (The best performance-wise w/ 3" tubing. Power Effects/Borla are only 2 3/4")

( I like 3" , I've got the SLP catback)

BBK High-Performance Twin 52mm Throttle Body

( 48 is fine without heds and cam mod)

CAGS Eliminator

(Ed will do it with programing)

Granatelli Mass Air Flow Sensor (I think this might be good w/ the SLP and the BBK Throttle Body, and it couldn't HURT)

(not necessary, no gain for the money)

Hooker Ceramic Coated Shorty Headers (not long tubes, because I want to stay legal w/ Catalytic Converters).

( I like the SLP shortie headers, better fit and finish, but little if any performance gains. You can run cat with Long tubes on a 6M cat they do fit, and longtubes allowes for better tuning.)

Hurst Shifter

(I'M AN A4 GUY, not fair for me to comment)

160 Degree Theromostat

( always a good mod, get that baby to run as cold as you can)

Jacob’s Energy Core Spark Plug Wires

(I'm using stock LT4 wires, they work ok for me)

SLP "Claw" Cold Air Intake (Would get Forced Air, but I like the looks of this better)

(Is as good if not better than any)

Throttle Body Coolant Bypass

( Yes, a no brainer)

What are your thoughts on this? Any additions, comments, or substitutions?

(I HOPE THIS HELPS)

Thanks in advance,
Andy

My humble opinions:

Ed Wright Programming: Yes, make sure you do this after the gears so you don't need to get it reprogrammed again. Also, Ed WILL tell you not to use an aftermarket MAF. As mentioned above, this also eliminates the need for the CAGS bypass.

3.73:1 Gears: I love mine -- perfect compromize for street/race (although I do road course stuff more than dragracing).

B&B Tri-Flo Cat-Back Exhaust System: Can't hurt. I'm really happy with my Corsa.

BBK High-Performance Twin 52mm Throttle Body: Yep!

CAGS Eliminator: Not needed with the programming. However, well worthwhile if you don't get the programming.

Granatelli Mass Air Flow Sensor: DON'T DO IT! Save your money for a cam.

Hooker Ceramic Coated Shorty Headers: Shorties won't buy you much, except they look better than the stock manifolds. Save your money for a cam.

Hurst Shifter: Don't know -- I have a B&M. It's a love/hate thing. I love mine, some guys hate them.

160 Degree Theromostat: Yep. Again, do this before you get the programming.

Jacob’s Energy Core Spark Plug Wires: I'm very happy with my Taylors.

SLP "Claw" Cold Air Intake (Would get Forced Air, but I like the looks of this better): I have the AO Engineering unit that goes through the radiator shroud. Does it do any good? I have no idea!

Throttle Body Coolant Bypass: Free!

Others:
-Tires: Power doesn't do any good if you can't get it to the ground. The stock GSC's stink. I'm very happy with my BFG G-force KD's, but it really depends on what kind of driving you're going to do.

-Consider long-tube headers. Not sure what the emmissions testing is in your area, but some guys switch back and forth every couple of years for testing. You can also get bullet cats to fit with long tubes with a little modification. This is my next mod.

Most of all: ENJOY!!!

The changes I'd suggest:

4.10s
Holley 52MM TB
No skip shift eliminator (previously stated Ed Wright takes care of it)
AS&M ceramic coated headers/y-pipe
Pro 5.0 shifter (I had the Hurst Billet Plus and swapped it for a Pro 5.0 as soon as I tried one)
MSD 8.5MM Super Conductor wires
Stock MAF - it'll handles the power you're going to make
