Default 1993 AC Compressor

My compressor is leaking around the shaft seal, i want to convert to 134A. Is the compressor for the 94 to 96 a direct replacement (denso 471-0335)

Will the clutch from my 93 fit the 94 compressor?

I know I will have to replace a few other parts but I'm just not sure which compressor to get.

Dave

I don't think there is any difference between a '93 and a '94 compressor.

The difference comes about by what refrigerant/oil you put in it first -- in other words, if you put R12 and mineral oil in it, you shouldn't use PAG oil in it.
And, if you put R134a and PAG oil in it, you shouldn't put mineral oil in it.

I think most compressor rebuilders today fill the compressor with an oil that is compatible for either system. It depends what oil you use with the refrigerant.

the compressors for the listed years are compatible and direct fit replacements. If you elect to get an new or rebuilt go for the clutch as well. It appears a replacement goes for around the $500. range. Check out some reputable a/c shops. To do the job right it is alot more than just a direct replacement. Normally when a compressor is changed you usually go for a new drier as well. When the unit has to be charged, it must have the correct oil added and the system vacated before adding regriferant. There are definintely differences between r-12 and r-134a. the main difference is in price and availability, as well as cooling. I have heard that r-134a works great, and others are not as satisfied. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info guys.

I just picked up a denso 471-0335 for the 94-96 R134 with the clutch. Hope to have it installed next week.

Since '88, the Vette (except the ZR1) uses the Nippondenso 10PA20C compressor. In '92, the manifold is reversed and faces forward. Here's a link to a guy doing the shaft seal on a Nippo. Different case, but the nose piece and installation is the same. Shaft seal kits are 50 Bucks at NAPA:

R134 is used in all domestic production starting in '94. With the change over, the main hose uses a sealing washer instead of orings and that manifold is machined to accept only those sealing washers. When replacing your compressor, verify what it's using. Prior to '94 the charge was R12. You need a license to purchase R12. Easy to obtain at www.epatest.com or any of the sites listed at www.epa.gov or some of the a/c boards such as www.ackits.com have links to others.
