Default Camshaft Phasing

1996 388 LT1

I'm thinking of playing around with the phasing of my camshaft. Right now it's degreed in per the spec card that came with the cam. I came up with 108.5 on a 109.

From eye-balling everything, since I'm running an ATI Super Damper, it looks like I can pull the water pump and Opti, drop the pan a tad, then unbolt the timing chain cover slide it forward and rotate it out of the way just enough for me to access the cam gear and bolts.

If that's all it'll take, I plan to have at it.

Has anyone done it that way before?

Do you have a slotted/adjustable cam gear? What are the specs of the cam, and what do you want to accomplish by changing it?

Jake, I have done this before when changing cams, and will be doing it again with my new cam in a few weeks. Takes some time to get to Germany as you know.

No, I don't care for them, they're too restrictive as to possible changes. I've always used off-set bushings. I intend to advance and/or retard the cam in increments until I'm happy with the result.

At the risk of seeming rude (which I don't mean to be), I prefer to keep to the point of my question. I don't want to have to get into what my cam is and/or why am I doing it, or other opinions such as "Just leave it according to the cam card" and stuff like that.

I just want to know if I'll have the clearance I need.

Tell you what, I'll post my signature; it'll cover most of the bases. How 'bout that for a compromise?

Surely someone has done/tried this with the ATI Super Damper.

Thanks,

Jake

I was just curious in terms of where you were looking to move the power around. Some people like more low-end vs top-end. As for the cam specs, well that just helps people know the possible outcomes of the changes. But considering you are just looking for whether or not it can be done in the way you describe I'll leave that up to someone that is running that specific damper.

Thanks, ZIX for you comments and how well you've taken my response to them.

I've followed your responses in the past and have learned from and APPRECIATED your input. I DEFINITELY DID NOT WANT TO alienate you.

Now that ARNOLD has given me what information I need, I'm a "satisfied customer".

THANKS, Arnold! It's always best to talk to someone who's walked the road first.

NOW, when I get stuck, I know who to contact! LOL
