Default Lt4 / 396 ??

Well just got home and fired up my 96 LT4 vette that has given me 127,000 miles of trouble free operation and " rap rap rap rap" coming from down low in the motor .. Sounds like a rod bearing boys and girls.. argggg depressed

So I wanted to post this and get some input ...
I am thinking if the crank is toast to stroke it ! I have seen a 396 kit out there that looks nice .. What do you guys think .. Good Idea??
Here is a link to one I found http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...7912965&rd=1,1

What are you going to use for heads? With stock heads and the -5cc pistons in that kit a 396 is going to have some killer compression, probably more than 12.5 to one.

The extra compression comes from the longer stroke...

Notice the kit says 11.4 to one with 64CC heads? Stock LT4 heads are about 10ccs smaller than that.

Build a 383 and run dish pistons with the stock heads and you will be around the same compression as factory 10.8 -11.0

Got basically the same kit for sale, with a 4 bolt block, machined, ready to assemble. Crank kit is brand new in the box. PM if interested.

When you increase displacement and squeeze it into the same size combustion chamber, the compression automatically goes up.

It will take a larger chamber to maintain the same static compression ratio with an increased stroke assuming the piston does not change. IE if they're both flat top pistons using the same heads, the engine with the longer stroke will have a higher compression ratio.

I welcome the day my LT1 needs bottom end work. Cause I cant wait for the 383 or 396 it will force me to do, even though my wallet will take a hit. Good luck on new motor or rebuild.

My apologies to Mr Dave. I never really thought of it that way, but it makes sense.

Well thanks ... I guess the ol boy was due for a rebuild anyway .. I will start a new post once I have a direction and document the build.
I have always thought that the LT4 was freaky fast anyway so it should be real nice at 383 or 396 CI
Was looking at headers tonight ... Damn since when have headers became something you take a loan out for .. geeze

I hear you. Talk to anyone with a 383 or 396 and they say the diffference between stock displacement is night and day.

YEP!! And you might be surprised at how many rather heated debates I've had with guys trying to convince them of that.
