Default zf-6 question

I need to replace my zf. Could one of the experts explain the difference between the blue and black tag on the zf? Also were all zf-6s geared the same and how could I tell the difference if they weren't? I have a 94 LT1. Thanks in advance for your insight.

Black tags were in the earlier cars, blue in the later. Black's higher rating was because it had straighter-cut gears but were also noisier. The blues were more helical cut to quiet them down, but they lost a little strength.

In a '94, you most likely have a blue tag. I believe they both had the same ratios.

Your 94 is a blue tag. It has the newer gear geometry and is quieter. There is one for sale now in parts section for $1400 new.

Thanks for that clarification. Now, can anyone tell me if there is a clutch that will make less noise when matched up with a SMFW? I am switching back to a DMFW, but a friend will be using a SMFW and is concerned about the noise. Thanks again, the info you guys provide is invaluable.
