I'm re-posting this because I'm really interested in finding out the cause of an auto tranny rumble - almost like driving over a wash-board roadway - but only at a certain speed.
Hiya Buddy,This is Bills86 I changed the nick just so ya know...anyways If you cant get any help here, you can try these guys Ill post below.
...In the past I have emailed them questions relating to a FWD 4T60E because I didnt think Id get info off the forum since it wasnt vette related..they seem to know all the GM trans real well.Im sure Pete K will chime in soon...but this is for another route if you cant find any decent answers.
Anyways they always emailed me back with good info...seemed really nice knowledgeable people trying to help.

The most common rumble is torque converter.
I have seen transmissions (auto) rumble from the following:
Bad case bushing
slightly damaged planetary(usualy rear planet)
Beast reaction shell(usually rumbles in 3rd gear)
Wow, Now I'm in the position of suspecting the new HUGHES converter.
Never had a single problem before I installed it, now I get an intermittent rumble in Drive gear at part throttle. It comes and goes but never lasts for more than a couple of hundred RPMs.
I don't suppose there's any 'fix' for it, other than pulling the converter, right?
Guess I bought the wrong converter. And, man what a PIA it is to change it. I should have known that things were going too smoothly with the new engine.

Thanks Pete,

Jake,
Try to rotate the converter in relation to the flexplate. Sometimes this will help to minimize, or eliminate it. Don't give up yet. Hughes is a quality company. One of the few I would use if I had no access to my company. The odds of a defective Hughes converter is quite slim.
I thought of 1 other possibility. Sometimes the rear stator bushing wears, allowing the input drum to occcilate a bit. This is possible, but not likely as it allows for fluid to cross link at the stator shaft teflon seals.
If the only thing changed in the trans area was the converter, I would suspect it first. Especially if it happened immidately after the motor swap. As I said, rotate it first before removing it....Pete
I rotated it one bolt hole a few days ago and the rumbling was reduced a lot. I'm now wondering if moving it one more bolt hole will give me more positive results.
As I said, it only happens in Drive and Over-Drive when light throttle is applied. If I drop into 2nd gear, go pretty heavily (not WOT though) into the throttle the manually shift into Drive, it's smooth as silk.
I just don't want to do damage to the trans that'll cause me to have to drop it for a rebuild.
Never experienced this sort of problem before; I'm like a babe in the woods on this one.
If it reaches a point where the converter is removed, the endplay can be checked. From the description, it does sound possible that the endplay is excessive.
Try the 3rd hole and see what happens.

Okay, I'll give the 3rd hole a shot in a couple of days, after I recover from the last time I was down under.
