Default LT headers

What's the difference between the LT1 and L98 Longtube headers, or pre and post 92, that"s the cutoff right?

Mainly emissions hook-ups, if equipped. Other than that, most are interchangeable as far as basic fitment goes. You do want to make sure that whatever header is used is also compatible with a given engine's exhaust port design. For instance, round port headers don't work well with D-port heads but oval ports generally will.

Both bolt to the heads the same, but emissions stuff and sensor fittings will be different, as well as the exact placement of the collector/or where it bolts up to the rest of the exhaust.

So a set of TPIS headers for 92/96 cars should bolt into my 87 with AFR 1040 D port heads, and then I could plug one of the O2 bungs and build a new exhaust system to the headers?
I was going to keep my stock exhaust complete for sniffer testing when needed.

That is what I am doing. I do not have them installed yet though but fitment on my '88 looks fine with '96 headers. I have an older pair of TPIS headers that I am reconditioning.
