Having an LT1 I'm not really qualified to say anything about the L98. I can just say that the 6-spd would give you greater flexibility to manipulate the RPM's so you can have the most fun with it.
IMHO a manual is always more fun than an auto, unless of course you wind up sitting in rush hour traffic. (I'll go 10 miles out of my way to avoid such situations)
I'll just saw that the ONLY reason I bought the vette I did (other than it was black ) was because it was a 6-speed. I know people say that auto vettes are faster at the dragstrip, but I don't drag race. I just can't see driving a car like the vette with an automatic transmission, it just seems against the rules of nature or something :)
Fun?

I waited an extra month so I could get a 6 spd. Much more rare and gobs more fun to drive unless you are in stop and go (your leg gets tried of holding the clutch after a while), or you want to drink your coffee. The auto is great at the track but that lasts a quarter of a mile. I use mine as a daily driver, so the other 69,999.75 miles have been great!!!

Much more fun, easier to kick **** on the freeway too. A little harder to gauge when the auto tranny is going to kick down rather than just dumping it down to 3rd and hauling butt at 65.
Agree! I drove a few automatics before buying the 6 speed. I don't race so I won't say about performance but it sure is fun to drive. Until I have to buy a new clutch then I may change my mind  :)
Hell Yea!!!!!!! Damn I'm on my second vette and being a stick is a must, personally I wouldn't buy a sports car with out it, being able to go through the gears is half the fun......the other half is downshifting :)
Get the 6-speed. There is just something about being able to toe-heal downshift in a sports car that just makes my day. You gotta love the sound of a perfectly matched downshift. Plus, I feel that a Vette is just not complete without having a 6-speed. You have so much more control of the car when you get to pick your own gears. The downside of a 6-speed is rush hour traffic.
I sold a perfect 84 auto for a 6 speed. I loved my 84 but after driving a 6 speed I would never go back to an auto. As far as perfomance goes its really all in the driver. Shift points are crucial and well as lauch rpms. Its just something that takes practice.
Unanimous so far. In a sports car, I would only want a stick. It's more fun to me. Stop and go is a little tough, but I got used to it. And like the other posters, I don't go to the race track either.
I have an auto right now. Reason is that I use it as a daily driver and I have a good 45 mins each way in stop and go traffic. Resale might be a bit easier too (if I ever do that). If I had a better drive to work, I would have gotten the 6 speed in a heartbeat. There is something special about a V-8 stick.
