Default check my combo

I just dropped off a 511 4 bolt 400 block at the machine shop to be checked out, and I found another I can pick up if this one isn't OK.

I found a new never used Eagle ESP-440038006000 crank I can pick up for $450. That's a 3.80 stroke 4340 steel internally balanced 400 main crank.
I can pick up a set of Eagle CRS6000BST "ESP" 6" Maximum Stroke H-beam Connecting Rods for $405 at Jegs.

I was looking at 2 different pistons, both SRP

P/N 138100 4.155" flat top with 5cc valve pockets
or
P/N 147549 4.155" inverted dome with 16 cc dish

both have a 1.125" comp. height.

I figured 3.80 stroke divided by 2 = 1.9" + the 6" rod = 7.9" + the 1.125" comp. ht. = 9.025 the std. 400 block deck height. a felpro 1014 4.200 bore .039 compressed thickness head gasket with my AFR 195cc 1040 heads with 68cc chambers would give me 10.09 compression with the inverted dome piston and 11.32 compression with the flat tops.

I was thinking LPE 219 cam with the CC 1.6 rockers that I bought from Draven hear on the board, and I also just got some TPIS LT's that are being shipped to me now.

I was thinking SR or LT1 converted for intake.

The car is an 87 Z51 that was originally a 4+3 but is now an auto, so it has a 44 with 3.07's

I need opinions.

What, not even one opinion on this combo?

Well, while waiting on the news from the machine shop about this block, I scored a complete SR intake, base runners plenum and TB.

I wasn't really sure if that was the intake I wanted to use, but the price was right, so for now it's at least a better option than my stock TPI intake.

I went to a builder that a friend recommended here in my area, supposed to build really nice stuff, and he about bit my head off when I said I had a 400 sbc block I wanted him to check out. he said he wasn't interested in touching one of those blocks because they're all junk. He said if I wanted to bring him a Little M or a 350 we could talk.

Wow!

Ouch!

Sorry dude!

I'm out!

Sounds like a fun streetable combo. Didnt catch what intake you are running. Sure like to find a good 509 or 511 block.
If it were me Id keep it around 10-1

Well I just picked up a Super Ram, but just because I got it doesn't mean that's what has to be run.

I live in Cali so I'm going to have to fight the smog bs.
Most likely going to have to do the every two year switch if I really want to have fun in between checks.

Yeah I was leaning towards the inverted dome pistons. I came up with the comp. numbers using the desktop dyno.

I guess I've better start doing my homework in the tuning dept. or find someone locally that knows how to get this to run good. I've been reading that the SR intake is really fun to tune.

I figure since I'm picking up the CC 1.6 RR's that I'd keep the lifters CC also.

Any recommendations on reto roller lifter setups for the 400 or does that sound good?

By changing only the intake type from tuned port to single plane the HP goes from 509 to 587.

So would a MR or LT1 intake be comparable to a single plane?

Either way. I can't imagine this combo would yield these numbers in the real world.

On the other hand, when I punch in all the specs for a stock L98 proper numbers did pop up, as have other stock combos I have tried in the past on this program.

Don't you just love bench racing?

That thing would love a miniram or LT1 but its up to you if you want to swap intakes for smog. Actually it depends if you get called into a state test only facility or not
