I've disassembled my 87 C4 engine due to a bad head gasket.
Coolant was seeping into cylinders. I'm ready to get very busy. I
have new ZR-1 rims and many new parts. Rear updated bumper
to late C4. I'm looking at doing some performance mods to this car.
I have a good budget to work with. I just had a complete valve
job done and before I take the block in to the machine shop I have
a big technical question. The car has a 700 r4 auto tranny. I'm
thinking of a 383 stroker.` Can the auto handle the torque. I don't
want to get too crazy on the HP but I want to surprize these
Subaru's. They are starting to get on my nerves. I'd hate to convert
to a manual trans and I'm not even sure it's possible. I love this
old vette and want to keep it. Advice appreciated.
Whether the auto can handle the torque will depend on just how much you put to it, it can be beefed up, but there is no definite limit to what they can take. It'll blow when it wants.

My 87 went 10.90's in the 1/4, had a best mph of 129, and a best 60' of 1.500. My stock trans held up for a while. It was the exception, not the rule. As Vader said, it will break when it is ready.
