Hey Dennis, it is fairly easy to cut the air box lid. I did it on my 86. I removed the air lid and used a grinder with a cutting disc. Draw out a line to follow while cutting. If you want the cut to look better, you might want to purchase one from Mid America....if you have the funds.

Did the open lid give you any SOTP Feel, Improvement etc?
No, I didn't notice any improvment in SOTP. I also used a AC Delco air filter and not a K&N, but shouldn't make much difference either way. No dyno results before and after either. I figured it was free and looked like it would improve air flow.
