I'm having a tough time diagnosing a short circuit. So far I've fried two batteries in the process.
1985 Corvette with a 6-speed conversion. I had dash troubles, replaced the dash with a used one. Seems a little dim and one signal light indicator now stays on. There is still a short with the dash removed.
I've located the short on the 30 amp fuse in the main fuse cluster (on the passenger side). I'm not sure what this circuit is as I can't read the text on the panel or find any reference on the internet.
I've checked:
- fog light switch
- lighter
- heater fan switch
- stereo wires
- all loose wires under the dash
- instrument cluster
- interior lights
- window/seat/mirror switches
- engine compartment lights
- alternator
I'm still getting a short circuit. I currently have the battery out (its toast)
Any suggestions as to where I should go to from here?
First, a totally run down battery does not ruin the battery. It does take a small amount off its normal life though, and it should be charged up immediately with a battery charger and once a week put on a charger for an hour until you trace your short and fix it. Or just put a battery tender on the battery, it will charge the battery up and keep it up.
Next, there are no 30 amp fuses used in your fuse block! The two largest fuses are 25 amps and these are the a/c and wiper fuses. DON'T put a 30 amp fuse in your fuse block! If you describe the position (row and column) of the fuse that keeps blowing, we can tell you what circuit that fuse is on and then you can trace and test each device on that fuse. Let us know what position the fuse is in.
That fuse is the courtesy/clk fuse and it is supposed to be 15 amps. Get that 30 amp fuse out of there and NEVER put a 30 amp fuse anywhere in your fuse block!!!!!!! Unplug the radio and see if you still blow 15 amp fuses. If so, then you need to trace the wires going to the courtesy lights.
