Generally, that means you've lost the vacuum from the engine, and the "default" position is blowing through the floor and defrost. Check your vacuum connections for a broken or disconnected line. If that's not it, you probably have broken connection on the controller,or possibly a bad controller. It's to dark to go look at mine, and I can't remember the vac locations.
I had the same problem on my '96.
For me, it was the controller under the dash.
$600 later and two days at the Stealership and it was fixed.
Looking back, I should have tackled that problem myself.

Pull the passenger side engine injector cover. There should be a three way vacuum connector that plugs into the plenum. That is the vacuum supply for the air conditioner. I just checked mine and one of the "****" was bad! Looks like off to the parts store for me! (actually hadn't had any problems....yet!)
Click on "Search this Forum", type in "AC vents", you should get about 3 pages of threads. Not all will address your problem but many will. Best of luck.
