Default Mustang vs Vette

I have a friend (2 old guys) who has a 68 Mustang Boss 302, completely restored. We got to talking and discussing and disagreeing about who would win. I have a 92 LT1 with auto/ GU2 axle, vert. nearly bone stock for now.

He insists he will blow my doors off in a regulation quarter mile. I tried to explain to him that the LT1, while it may sound and act mellow, is a beast after about 2200 RPM. He say BS.

Assuming he is stock...and I'm stock...who wins?

Though you didn't mention trannys, I think the 24yrs is in your favor. You should run mid to hi 13s while that Boss won't.

Definitely sounds like a rustang crushing event to me. Factory stock vs. factory stock, he's in for a hurtin'. I'd even give'em drag radials just to make'em feel good.

Let us know how it works out!

If he is indeed stock. Then ask him put his money where his mouth is. My $ is on the LT1. Boss 302 ain't as fast as he likes to think.

Boss 302's were 1969 and 1970 only. I owned a '70. If both cars are stock, the Corvette would be faster. However, with some mods, the Boss 302 is a very fast car. The heads have very large ports and valves, so they flow very well. Like the old Corvette LT-1, the Boss 302 was a higher RPM engine than most of the old V8's. Also, the available rear end gears in the Boss 302 were 3.50, 3.91, and 4.30. If the Boss had the 4.30 gears and some moderate mods like a decent cam, headers, etc., then I wouldn't bet on the stock Corvette.

Just a little story.....

My husband has a 1970 Mustang Mach 1 that he has had for over 16 years. He tolerates (barely) Vettes, but is a true Mustang enthusiast. To me, a mustang is just basic transportation. Anyway, months before I had even purchased my car, he was bragging about how his car would blow the doors off of a '93 LT-1. I kept telling him he was mistaken and should prepare himself for a beat-down. He has a 351 Windsor, 4 spd, pretty tall gears.

Well, after I had purchased the car, the time finally came for him to put up or shut up. We were able to catch a red light together, and once it turned green it was all over.

I looked BACK, and there he was, a good 1 1/2 car lenths BEHIND me.

Afterwards all he could say was, "I didn't know your car was so fast."

He had indeed been humbled. :blueangel:

The windsor was such a CRAPPY engine. It was only rated at 250bhp. The Cleveland was MUCH better (300hp).

The Boss 302 was rated at 290hp, but I wouldn't count on that, because the engines were very underrated at that time with the Insurance and Government both breathing down their necks. 780 cfm 4 barrel Carb, 0-60 in 7 seconds. I honestly wouldn't count out the Boss... if he rebuilt it with 100% stock parts you MIGHT have a chance, but if he rebuilt it with a few extra holley/edelbrock aftermarket parts.... just get ready to look at his rear the whole time.

boss motors were windsor shortblock with clevland style heads, 98% of the fast small fords are windsor based motors, and there are some very fast ones out there. i guess i'am an equal opportunity hot rodder, i have a 600+hp (dyno) windsor based small ford, these days its no big deal to get good hp out of chevy or ford.

You are telling me that Windsor engines are better than Cleveland?
