After changing the oil to 10w30 Mobil 1, the engine seems to have gotten a lot nosier, piston slap. It is really noticeable on cold start up. I know that forged pistons are prone to make noise, plus the Mahle pistons I am running have almost no skirt at all. After the engine warms up the noise is almost completely gone. The piston to wall Clarence was somewhere between .002-.0025. A .002 feeler gauger would fit but a .0025 would not. Mahle calls for .002-.003 depending on what you are doing with the motor.
Also, using my mechanics stethoscope, it seems like the valve train is louder using the thinner oil, lifters, roller rockers, etc..
The first 383 I built used the kb hyper pistons. Man, was that thing noisy. I hated it, until it gave me my first 10 second timeslip. Then, the noise no longer bothered me.
