I've been searching the local yards for an LT1 block but did come across a 94 4 bolt vette block so i picked it up. I'm not looking to use this on my own because I need a 2 bolt block to use my billet splayed caps so i wanted to clean it up and put together a toy motor to play around with in the garage.
the block has surface rust on the outside. it looks like it has been painted but its all faded and am not sure if its the paint flaking or the rust on the outside.
What good chemicals are there to use to remove rust? The only thng that comes to mind is CLR... i remember that stuff in commercials. I was thinking to use a wire brush ona drill and try and clean the rust off.
Have a machine shop pull the cam bearings, freeze plugs, and hot tank it. When you get it home you can give it a good hot soap and water bath, including using brushes in all the oil passages, dry it off, and paint it. Then hermetically seal it in a plastic bag until you are ready to use it.
