Its probably a good opti. Heck, I bought a new one off of ebay for 189.00. Looks like a genuine delco but not sure. Works good. Ad said it was improoved from original. Figured my original lasted for over 50000 miles that this one should too. Especially since I know now why they fail. Coolant and or water getting into them. I will be extra carefull with this one. Good luck.
Replace your stock LT1 Optispark distributor with our all-new Summit LT1 Optispark I or II distributors. These distributors feature an aluminum housing with heavy-duty oilite bushings, and a glass-reinforced cap with high dielectric strength and brass terminals. sounds just like the accel unit .
I had thought about that unit and the ebay one. I didn't want the Accel one. The oilite bushings in them turned me off even though oilite bushings have been around forever and work well. The GM units have ball bearings. These can wear out too, especially in the 92-94 nonvented distributors. GM units at Summit are $395.
The most important part of the decision for me was that I plan to keep the car forever and because of that I wanted quality and a vented system.
I walked into Summit on Tuesday and bought a MSD for my 92. I didn't want to spend this much but the peace of mind is worth it to me.
The MSD is really built well. There were a few little installation things I didn't like but nothing major.
The car runs really sweet now.
Just depends on how long you plan on keeping you vett as to how much you want to spend. I plan on moving up next year with something else so didnt want to spend a ton for an opti. If I was going to be buried in it then that would have been different...ha.
My 94 was acting a lot like you describe. I had it scanned and there were opti codes. I replaced the opti, pump, and plug wires runs like a new one. I got my opti for 360 at vette parts house here in Atlanta for $360. 770-978-0803 sam@fullthrottlecorvette.com
I also bought a "discount" opti on ebay. It lasted 6 months. It was one of the new "brass terminal" black cap ones. Then I bit the bullet and got an MSD unit. What a difference. The car can really rev now and is very smooth. It hits the rev limiter very quickly. If you plan on keeping the car the MSD is a great investment. If you do the oilite repop offshore distributor, be aware that you need to sell the car soon, as it will be acting up soon.
You have remember this.....Summit does not manufacture Opti Spark Units. They do whats called Volume Purchases. They go to the manufacture and tell them to put their name on the item and they will purchase 10,000 units to get the volume buy.
Thats why they can sale for less and move more product.
I am a Packaging designer and I deal with Summit on a daily bases.
I see stuff 2 years before it hits the shelf.
