Default 88 Differential Lube Change

greetings,
i have an 88 vette...i was looking at a picture of a 92 vette on another forum site and it showed what appeared to be the fill plug on the differential as being "inboard" (being on the side facing the transmission)....

....when looking at my 88's, i noticed a fill plug as being on the "outboard" side (side facing the rear bumber cover) and which was almost inaccessible....

...is this fill plug location the same on the 88 as it is on the 92?...or am i looking at something totally different?....is teh 88's inboard or outboard?......thanks again!

Take a look at C4guru's home page. Its Bogus home page. Under the tech library, covers this subject with photos from start to finish.

I can confirm the drain/fill plug on my '88 is on the passenger side of the diff. I am not sure about the '92. It is a large threaded plug with a large round end with a hex inset. It may still have a red plastic tag hanging from it. On my car I use a pipe wrench on the plug. I think I remembered to pick up the hex size for it now though. There is some room.

....thanks for the reply...that is where i was and saw a pict of a 92..i am not interested in the 92 at all other then if the placement of the fill plug is in the same place......i have done a "oil" change of a gearbox before (on my 81) and am familiar with it...however, as i said before, i can see a fill plug on the passenger OUTBOARD side of my 88's differential but, accessibility is the problem!...the pict of the 92 threw me as the article said teh 92 was located on teh INBOARD side..

......thanks for the reply...i realize that it is on the PASSENGER side but, is it on the INBOARD or OUTBOARD side of the differential?...another question; did you have to remove ANYTHING to acess the fill plug?

No I did not remove anything, there is enough space to R&R the plug and place a hose in there to pump lube in.

Sorry, by outboard I think you mean on the side by the passenger tire. The opening/plug points toward the pass tire.

... common mistake (inboard/outboard) so that is why i clarified my description in my initial post..however, is the plug on the "transmission" side of the differential or the "rear bumper cover" side of the diferential?..

...i read in a post that there is a mity-vac pump for doing this.....are you aware of any chain stores (autozone, advance auto parts, pep boys) that sell the pump?.....thanks again!

By transmission side I take to mean the forward side toward the radiator, and bumper cover I take to mean on the backward side toward the gas tank. It's not either of those sides, it is on the passenger side of the diff, by the passenger side half shalf. The plug points toward the right rear rotor. You can't miss it when you look, it's the only fitting on there and it's pretty big, it may still have a red tag on it.

You can use a bunch of different ways to change the lube. Auto parts places should have pumps. I use a hand pump, I run some WD through it after I pump the old lube out, to clean it before pumping the new lube in. I shop at Fleet Farm, the stores you listed are further away so I do not go to them very often.
