I remember the mechanic trying that when I first got the car! Couldn't figure it out then either.

Switch gears. No matter how smoothly and convincingly he talks, if he's not giving positive results, dump him. You need "old school" not a computer wiz.

We're not talking rocket science here. A "mechanic" with half a brain can track down the source. There are only so many places.

Have you ever had your fuel injectors checked? Your description of what your car is doing sounds just like my car. I replaced the exhaust system, but the rattle was still there, along with a miss and the occasional lean backfire. Plus your car came w/ Mutlitechs, which are known for going/being bad. I would have them checked first, I'll bet a few are bad.
BTW, I assume your car is an automatic?
