I noticed that my car was overheating today in traffic. It runs very cool on the freeway fwiw. When I got home today, I let it idle in the driveway, and noticed that the fan did not come on, even up to 236°. It also would not come on when the a/c was turned on.
Looking for a cause, we ran across some burned wiring. I was wondering if this has anything to do with the fan control, or it's just another problem with the car.
If this isn't the fan control, then where is it/what is this?
Is there a common problem with the 86's and not having the fan come on?
A bad fan motor is more likely to burn up the wiring than a bad relay. If the realy goes bad, usually the fan just does not work. The fan motor is not expensive.
Yep that is the fan relay. You can also ground A and B on the ALDL and the fan will run as long as the circuit is good. Fix the wiring and perhaps replace the relay and the can should come on. You can ground the ALDL and check instead of waiting for the engine temp to get to 227*. Or bypass it as 86PACER stated.
Thanks for the help guys! It turns out the lacquer on windings on the fan finally wore through and shorted to the armature. I got a new fan motor ($23) and replaced the fried wires.
