Hey all,
I broke my "U" joint where the tranny meets the drive shaft. It fact the drive shaft now has to be replaced since it broke the end. I removed the brackets holding up the mufflers and was able to remove the drive shaft and the end to the tranny.
So, I was thinking of replacing the rubber O seal that keeps the tranny from leaking in the rear. But... to get to that area I need to remove the exhaust. On the drivers side the 1st muffler? has three bolts/nuts. One is actually a bolt, the other two apprear as nuts. I have tried and tried and can't get the nuts to come off. Are these actually nuts (that may have rusted on) or does the stud turn? The reason I say the stud is it has a weird tip on it (maybe for a weird looking socket?)
Or are you talking about the cats? oooh, I bet you are talking about the cats... yea, soak them with PB Blaster.
Yeah unbolt the cats, or just ****ing sell the car. You don't successfully extract the cats unless you're a masochist to the point of needing to be committed. I hate those damn flanges. If there is any way to work around the cats I would. Otherwise, you're looking at dropping the rear exhaust (easy, except for where the cats connect), unbolting the manifolds so you can move things around, and then separating them from the cats (hard).
Edit: Oh god, he's talking about the cats. The weird-socket bolts he's referring to are the horrible allen-head bolts on the driver's side. You're done for, man.

the are not that tough to remove. PB blaster or direct heat (propae or acetline tourch) note do not apply flame to a blot you applied PB blaster or other penatrating oil. There is the candle wax method but under the car I think it would be a pain in the A--. The don't come off without a fight but even if they don't just replace them with some stainless bolts from a hardware store.
Simplest is to remove your manifold bolts and drop your exhaust, IMHO. (down pipes to manifold, NOT manifold to heads! And CERTANTLY not pipes to cats!))
Good Luck!

If you can't break the bolts free, then just cut them off with a sawzall and put in new bolts.
