The exhaust gas re-circulation valve allows, under certain specific circumstances, a small amount of exhaust gases to re-enter the combustion chamber for the purpose of decreasing combustion temperatures resulting in a decrease in the production of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx). EGR is only active in certain circumstances, never at wide open throttle, and generally only at part throttle. An EGR failed in the open state will cause hesitation and bogging, rough running. A EGR failed in the closed state will cause knock (and resulting reduction of timing and loss of HP) and increase in mid load/rpm NOx.

It stands for Environmental Government Regulation.........no really, it stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. By admitting exhaust gas into the air/fuel mixture, oxides of nitrogen (bad) are reduced because the fuel mixture doesn't burn as hot (efficiently). Combustion temperatures are cooler than with if no exhaust gas were in there at all. It also has the same effect as an octane booster. Both reduce the tendency for knock. It has the same effect of richening up the air/fuel ratio, and in fact you can have a chip burned to do just that and shut off EGR. EGR heats up your intake charge and adds deposits to your intake passages and intake valves.

$600.00? run! run far away. That valve could be no more than 120.00 at the dealer, 40-50 at the parts store. Plenum is EASY to get on and off. Valve is easy too. 20 minute job at most. Also see Juliet's thread.

$600!! Hope it comes with vaseline and they let you have a reacharound!! You can get a chip programmed to eliminate EGR for under $300. You can fix it yourself if it actually is the EGR valve for under $100. It's not all that hard to replace.

Wow Pete! You just HIT several of the problems I've posted about the past 6 weeks. Now that combined with Code 32 I'm certain it's got to be the EGR valve that's sticking or something. The really bad knock problems I had (though it was bad gas!!) must have been stuck open - and the rough idle and code 32 must be stuck closed. :yesnod: Thanks!!!!!
