Define high. Fans come on ~220*, give or take a few degrees.

Did this last summer.

Analog guage was in the hash marks and showed approx. 250* from guessing, 260* being the highest number which is miss leading. The temp dropped to 217* and both fans cut off. With the A/C on the temps sat around 201-205* and never got lower or higher. This I consider normal at idle and when driving at about 55 mph the digital temp guage stays around 185-190* range.

Have you observed when the fans come on with the A/C off? Let it idle and watch the digital coolant temp. If the fans come on with the A/C on, then the relay is good.

You probably have trash buildup between the radiator and condenser.

You can use a water hose and find an opening in the radiator shround and flush some of it out OR better would be to remove the upper radiator shround and get it all out.

A little off topic, but isn't there an aftermarket "fan on" switch you can buy that wires into the original harness?

That analog gauge will get right up close to the hash mark when the digital gauge is reading 228. As long as it does not go INTO the hash mark, you should be ok. GM recommends shutting the engine down at 260.

A modern cooling system in proper working order can handle 230 - 240 degrees pretty easy. Your car should not see 240 if everything is working as it should though.

Watch the digital gauge while sitting at an idle. It should get up to 228 or so, and then drop back down. If it continues to climb up past 235, then you should check into an airflow problem. Either fans, but probably more likely trash in blocking the radiator fins.

Here is an easy way to clean debris out of your radiator although it isn't as good as radiator removal. I use my garden hose adjusted for the smallest diameter stream and shoot it backwards through the radiator while holding the fan so it doesn't turn. If your temps are like RRT's, your radiator is pretty clean. My 87 left idling in summer temps (no a/c on) will rise to 228 F, the main fan comes on and engine coolant drops to 211 F and the fan shuts off, and it will repeat.
