If you mean MSD. It stands for Multiple Spark Discharge. In a very small nutshell, it sends out several sparks real quick for each spark plug firing, rather than one like your distributor does. Ensures a more complete burn, re-ignites misfires, etc. For a more in depth answer check out their website.
That study seems to suggest that above 2500 rpm you are only getting one spark per cycle, i.e. no different than stock. That must be why people always say smoother idle and better low end power, there appears to be little or no gain at high rpm? Did I read that right?
The way MSD does it (and other aftermarket Ign's), you have a hotter spark at the upper RPM's as well. Will it give you more power at the top,..... only if you don't have enough spark there to begin w/.
It's not going to you any harm at low or high RPM. If you are going to use the car in any way for competition, then IMO, get it. If not just buy a hotter HEI coil from a Jegs or Summit for ~$50.
h rocks summed up my vote, the 6 series box is wonderful for the real car nut of of the 21st century. if i wasn't as much of a race nut as i am & just drove the car on the street, i think i'd just get one of the high output hei coils, good wires, like taylor, msd, tpis etc..& decent plugs which i won't name since we just took a vote on them & my loved bosch's didn't win :( before long i'll have a whole section on my web site relation to basic L98 mods that really work as well as pics and oppinions of everything you can do without taking off the heads and show breaking 12's is possible on the L98 without head or cam work. well the speed density 6spd anyway which is a tad stronger than earlier years even to start with
Most of the Winston Cup cars use the MSD 6A boxes. Their main purpose is to keep the plugs clean during Pit Stops and Cautions. They seem to do a good job. After all money is no object for those guys and they wouldn't add the weight if they didn't work.
I think that even when it is over 3000 rpm the dwell is longer and it amplifies the primary voltage to the coil.
