Some of the newer valve cover gasket material specifically call for NO chemical adhesive at all. Either the sealant has a negative chemical effect on the gasket material or prevents it from sealing properly.
I just installed a set of Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus gaskets a few days ago and the installation instructions specifically warn against use of any sealants.
I followed the instructions and installed mine dry, which is contray to what I'm use to doing with cork-type gasket material.
I stood on the fence on this one ;) I put a little dab on the 4 outside corners of the Fel-pros and let it set up. At least they stayed in place during installation. Did this in March, so far so good....
I have the fel pro rubber gaskets and they didn't come with anything that said NOT to use a sealer. I just used the sealer to hold the gasket to the valve cover, I leave the other side dry. I've had them off and on many times without any leaks.
