If you had the engine at TDC when you removed it, the pin will be at 9 o'clock on the camshaft. Align the distributor driveshaft slot with the base timing mark and it should line up.

well it wasnt the one that was different than the other two... i just put it all back to gether and it backfired.. and didnt run ... so looks like my golf game has to be canceled 4 tomorrow

Sorry about the golf game but that was the right slot, so something else may be going on. Crossed plug wires? Bad component?

On the GenI you are right, on the GenII you are wrong. The GenII can be installed off time, I learned that the hard way. They seem to line up, bolt right on but can be installed wrong. Correctly aligned is as stated above, plus you should hear or feel a little 'pop' when they seat properly.

Again, it will only go together one way. You may be able to force it but only one way will it "pop" together. You can also force a Gen 1 together incorrectly.
