Default Problems removing X-Brace

1990 L98 Vert.

I can't get the bolts out that hold the x-brace at the corners. The bolts at the rear pass. corner spin but do not come out. I never got to the other corners but I know they are also messed up from the last time I had to remove it.

What is the best way to repair this problem? My guess is that the inserts in the frame have come loose and are spinning. I can grind the heads off the bolts to get the brace out if I have to. I would like to never have to worry about those inserts again if possible.

The last time I had this problem I had a 1/4" plate welded over the inserts, drilled/tapped it and it seems ok yet. Is this an acceptable thing to do again - for all 4 corners?

All this trouble to remove a driveshaft...

Any ideas?

Try pounding a wedge in between the X-brace and frame. That might create enough friction to hold the inserts.

Also, use only stainless steel bolts when attaching anything to an underbody. Also use a medium strength thread lock. Both will prevent rust bonding.

Ditch the pressed insert idea. Try a double weld nut, if you can find a center-to-center that is compatible.

I'll give the wedge idea a shot - easier than grinding off the bolts. This was with the stock hardware so no stainless. I like your suggestion and will buy stainless when I repair all this.

What is a double weld nut? Where might I find these?

Thanks!

Is this the weld nut you are referring to? Would a double just have a bridge of some sort between 2 of them?

That might work. I have a MIG welder in the garage but I am not good at it I could make it work, tho.

www.mcmastercarr.com

Search Weld Nuts.
Pick the offset tab SST variety. Welding that won't mess up the threads or thru hole.

I can't seem to find these little buggars locally. I'll keep trying tho. If all else fails, Lowe's has 1/4" steel bars I can use - It worked before.
