After three hours of lying on my back, pushing and pulling and twisting...I got my new ZF6 almost in place, except for the last 1/2". I'm tempted to run the trans bolts into the bellhousing and "winch" the danged thing in....Or is that not a good idea?
I installed a new clutch disc and pressure plate, I aligned the disc using the alignment tool, I greased the spline. I have a floor jack under the trans, and a bottle jack that I can use to lift up on the bellhousing as needed.
I can get it so it wobbles on the jacks while the input spline is (I guess) engaged with the clutch disc, but it just does not seem to want to slide in. I swear....I'm bout ready to light a match to the whole damn thing (Just kidding!)
So, winch it in with the mounting bolts, or pull it out and keep stabbing it until it goes in???
Did you clean the end of the main shaft that goes through
the pilot bearing? I had a similar problem on another vehicle, and it turned out being the end or the shaft was a little rusty.
I took some sandpaper and cleaned the small rust pits off and it slid right in. Hope this helps!
Have someone get in the car and push on the clutch pedal while you slide it on the rest of the way!
Yeah....That makes sense. With only 1/2" or a little more to go, I'm guessing the input shaft is at the pilot bushing now. Prolly some slight misalignment resulting from the new clutch etc.

I'll give that a try and let ya know!
I pi$$ed away no less than an hour one day, then i asked my wife to push on the pedal and it bascially slammed forward and then I tightened the bolts.

Make sure you have some bolts started already.
Taking your advice, I had my wife press on the clutch...kerthunK! The damn thing slid right into place! (I had some alignment studs in it to guide the trans if all else was clear.)
Well...THANK you very much for the tip!! The knowledge on this board is simply amazing!

Paul, you now must take this knowledge and spread it to the uttermost!

This was my first foray into anything major on a C4 Vette. Oh, the tricks I had to come up with, and the TOOLS I had to run to the store to get...would make a nice article, if someone were interested! Wanna change plugs on your '95? I can make that "easy" for ya. Need to pull your exhaust manifolds and put new studs in 'em...I got yer studs right here!
It has been a good experience. There's a whole lot different about a C4 Vette than working on a C1, 2 or 3, I can tell ya!! And, I'm sure the later models are just as "interesting" to work on as well.
Again, that tip re having someone press on the clutch was a real keeper! Thanks again!
