I have no clue what to call it, but is there a bar or some form of frame work that is available to put in when you remove the top on C4 coupes? I like running without the top, but would feel a lot better if there was something in there to stiffen it up. If there is something available, does it actually work? Is it worthwhile?
It's called a targa truss--don't know if it works. Corvette Central $435.00
Well......I didn't think it would look like that! I have looked at my car a few times trying to picture how I'd build one for it.....and I didn't ever picture it above the top line....and would much prefere round tube.....anybody know of anything else...or are you gonna tell me to build it myself?!!? Thanks jsavoy for the info and link...
I have been pleased with this from Pro Street Customs. It's been a little warm around here lately to use it lately. Cures the jitters.
YEAH tlong, that is what I would like. Where is Pro Street Customs located? Do you have a link to them or an address so we can look them up? Thanks a lot for replying/posting pics.
You can Google prostreetcustoms. It's called AFSB. Tom Gasper is the fabricator. I love mine. It's stiffer than the top and is race and autocross legal. You adjust the attachment points once, then it fits on there just like the top with the same torx screws. It sticks up just a little over the windshield frame and almost eliminates buffeting. He is cooking up a top cover for it. The welds need more dressing but the powder coat is great with clear coat powder as well.
The piece is year model specific so be careful. I suggest you call and talk to him first regarding availability. The only down-side is the cost....but vettes are expensive if you want all the cool stuff.
It's nice to have the sun shining in without the famous shakes and rattles.
I'll get the welder out and fab my own, have a pipe bender at work, will give me something to do over the cold months on the east coast, that's alot of green backs for something as monstrous as that, simple and clean looking that's the ticket!
Why do they all go down the middle like that? Remnants of a "T" top.
There should be two tubes that use the existing Torx fittings. If anything, they should bend outward towards the area where the window would be if you rolled it up.
Monstrous? I think the flex and shimmy are the monster. This is what Dave had in mind for the C4 coupe top anyway. It's beauty is in the function. I think it looks superbad. Costs the same as 2 rear meats y'all burn off in a weekend.
Yeah it's a bolt in t-top. It takes 1 minute to lay on there and bolt down with a cordless screwdriver, and weighs 1/2 of the top. Perfect for a helmet.
The problem this cures is the cantilever effect. Torsional flex is also eliminated by attachment at the four corners.
JFNLSA: We have enjoyed the weather imported from Phoenix here in Atlanta all we can stand! No mas!!!!!
This would look great on your black beast and trust me it works. I hated my car's feel with the top out.

Yeah, I really see me getting one of these in the near future. It'll be a couple of months before I can sanely remove the top....which gives me some time to sway the wife.
Tlong I didn't mean yours I was looking at the Targa truss, I would put one like yours in a heartbeat, just looked at your pics it's awesome, just wish someone would come up with something to use so when the targa top is on it gives better support, I'm sure that's why there always cracking.
Ive used the bar from pro street customs for 3 years now and couldnt be more happy. Looks good, made very good and really does make the car alittle stiffer. I think that its well worth the money. call 1-216-316-9812
Ya I thought the one in the catalogue was, well, not pretty. Can't see how you could retro-fit an acrylic top for more stability and prevent cracking. It's just a C4 personality trait! I have one of those and a solid top too. It's fantastic in the winter, stays warm and really looks like an F14 Tomcat from inside! It creaks a bit and may go wham down the middle one day. If so I'll get it fixed...
I was a Datsun Z car guy with an 81, 84 and 87, all t-tops. It was a cinch to pull out the driver's side and toss it onto the passenger seat. Guess I got used to the middle section. Don't even notice the bar up there at all. $400 is a steep price but when I'm doing the curves it's just money well spent.
