Default newbie Hypertech question

Hi all

I am a new owner of a low mile 95 coupe. I am enjoying the car and getting to know it. I have a quesiton regarding the Hypertech unit. The car has a hypertech box on it when I bought it and the paper was there with it. It was saying that if the car had to go in then it could screw with the diags and it may be required to put the stock computer back in. Well as you can guess it did not have the stock box with the car.It runs quite nice as is so I am not going to play with it but in the future will I need a stock unit, can the unit in it be programmed with a programmer, would it be better to put a newer unit in that can be altered for future mods and if so is there a stock flash available?

I read quite a bit about this chip and it seems performance wise it is not much better than stock but right now it is all I have.

Sorry for all the questions just getting ready to see all the things needed to bring it up to speed.

Thanks
Mat

Well after going through the paper work and having a good look under the hood the computer is still there. The hypertech unit is plugged in after so it looks as though it will be pretty easy to remove and replace with another unit down the road. Is there any software out there to alter this old unit maybe to alter fan temps and the like without spending an arm and a leg?

Get rid of the useless thing. The 95 has a flash chip in its PCM (using TunerCat, you can adjust almost every feature of the car), so using a Hypertech piggyback unit is the most pointless thing ive ever seen. Just be glad you didnt put it on there or pay for it yourself!!

Thanks for the response. I will have a look for tunercat, I assume it is just software? I will try and remove the unit when I get a little more brave, right now the fans appear to turn on around 220 is this pretty much the stock setting?

Stock setting should be 109*C on a 95, which is 228*F. Fan 1 is set to come on at 95*C (203*F) for low speed, but the issue there is the factory setting for low speed threshold is 0 mph, so it always runs off the higher mph setting unless you change that setting.

Fan 2 settings are factory set at 109*C for low mph, and 113*C for high mph (235*F)

Hysteresis is 6*C for low mph, and 5*C for high mph.

Look here: http://www.tunercat.com/ for TunerCat,

and here: http://www.tunercat.com/pdfs/pcm_$ee.pdf is a list of everything you can adjust with it.

Yeah mate, 94 and 95 and very near the same, and the same program and definition file i gave links for above is for both 94 and 95. I use it on my 94 very regularly, and for the money, its a far better setup than the hypertech programmer, even if youre only using it from a desktop computer to make changes.

The hypertech piggyback units are a total waste of time and money on a PCM that has the ability to be reprogramed an unlimited number of times.

If the car is auto, removing the piggyback will possibly make it feel abit slower and maybe less powerful, but this will more than likely be cause of the auto shift points, which can all be changed to whatever you like with TunerCat.

If you own one of them, try getting rid of it on ebay and program the PCM properly
