I have an 86 that just started running on a few cylinders (feels that way) while
the engine is cold. As the engine approaches operating tempeture, it runs better! After reaching full tempeture.... it is great again. My wife refuses to ride in it till I do something to rectify the problem. Can anyone give me a suggestion to fix. I have had this Vette for several years and never had a serious problem till now.
My 84 runs very rich untill it reaches 140 degrees or so. I would check for vacuum leaks first and then work through plug wires, plugs, distributor cap, rotor and even consider the maf sensor.
I'm currently having exactly the same problem.
I've recently replaced (for other reasons) the MAF, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, ignition module, and set the base timing. So it's not any of that stuff.
I'm thinking it's running too rich until it goes closed loop - so maybe a leaking fuel injector. I hadn't thought about the cold start injector - maybe....
Good luck. I'll let you know if I find out anything else.
I wass told by a reputable mechanic (if you can believe that) that it may be the coolant sensor switch. If that is it, it will be a cheap fix! Thanks for the help

That would be my guess. Check the dash temp reading before you start the car up in the morning. It should read close to the outside temp. Compare it to the oil temp sensor reading too. They should be close. Make sure all your bolts and throttle body bolts are tight. Check the ducting to the throttle body too.
