When I first start up the car, the light, just about the Tach numerical readout lights up. It's the D inside the O symbol, just like on the Trans shifter. However, it has never come on during driving conditions. Should it? If so, under what conditions? I've been looking closely to see when / if it would go on the past 3 or 4 days (since I first noticed the little light) and have yet to see it light up on it's own. BTW, I don't just drive in OD, I often use the lower gears around town to prevent it going into OD or shifting back and forth all the time in city traffic. My Upshift light does come on just fine though. Thanks, ~Juliet
You've got me stumped on this one. The OD light turns on and off with my 4+3 depending if I'm engaged in OD mode or not. I do not think that the light comes on with the 700R4 at all while driving. I've driven a few of them, and have never noticed it come on.
Your shift light though SHOULD come on if you are in an overdrive condition, but only in D for approximately 30 seconds.
My OD and upshift lights never come on. If they come on just as you start the car, but not while driving it may be just a startup thing. Nearly the whole DIC on my car lights up when I first start it. Maybe someone else here can tell us whose car need fixin. Are you still getting that EGR code?
The upshift light on mine comes on only above something like 50-60 mph, if I'm in 3 and not OD. I have to be at those conditions for a while before it will come on. Then it stays on until I shift into OD. I think it does it when I'm in lower gears also. If I drop below 45-ish, without shifting out of 3 (or D, I forget what it says on the shift plate - the one just below OD) the upshift light will go out, but only after I'm at that driving condition for 30 sec or a minute or so (never actually took a stop watch to it). If the car is in OD, the upshift light doesn't ever come on. Half of my daily commute is in city traffic and I often put it in lower gears, because otherwise it just gets shifted into a higher gear and I'm accelerating again forcing it to downshift yet again. It's easier between stoplights to just leave it in a lower gear, as long as I don't run the RPMs up too high I figure that's less wear on the trans.
As for the EGR - I'm still getting code 32 intermittently. I have the new valve on order from the dealer (should be in today). I'll swap that out and clean my TB (gaskets on order too) this weekend. I've got my fingers crossed it'll just contintue to give me the SES light and not stop running or strand me in NE DC! Funny thing, this AM I didn't get code 32, but the 2 days before I did. Go figure! :smash:
I don't think the EGR code will strand you. In fact when you come off the thruway stop and shut off the engine to turn off the SES light. It shouldn't come on again until you are above 2,000rpm for a few seconds.
OK, so now that you all have been watching your dash for that little OD light to come on the past few days - what's the verdict? :jester Anyone with a 700R4 trans ever see it come on other that during initial startup when the whole dash lights up?
I have a 87 with the 700R4 and the OD light has never come on. It is just there for the 4+3 when it is engaged in OD, so it is just there. Why should GM make another dash without the light for autos? It would cost too much and would have been another hassle for a car that was already released as an 84. :chevy
Your shift light though SHOULD come on if you are in an overdrive condition, but only in D for approximately 30 seconds.
Yea, what scorp said. :yesnod:
I've only seen it on a few times but yes, it does activate. I think the reason why I usually do not see it is b/c if I cruse in D at the OD rate of speed, that means I'm hunting for a kill or in the process of a kill. :reddevil And doing either of those I'm looking at the road and not the gauges. :blueangel:
So, 1 for Yes they do light up - and the rest of ya haven't noticed it. :D Guess I'll deliberately go out there and drive it hard in D and see what happens. :) Thanks! ~Juliet

Re: '87 Digi-Dash "OD" light question (Juliet)
I think that someone replaced your dash at one time, and used one for the 4+3 stick instead of one for an automatic car. They will both work and interchange.
