Default Hypertech question

I have an early 86 without those wonderful aluminum heads. However, I have a hypertech thermomaster chip made for those later versions. Question is, would this chip still function correctly with my car?
Thanks!

Get rid of the bloody thing and get a properly tuned chip done to suit your car. Hypertech chips are a generic tune and generic tunes are good for nothing.

Sell it on eBay

The main thing it does is turn on your fans sooner.....and of course make your wallet lighter. I suppose that would make your car go faster. www.pcmforless.com makes chips for your car.

If it's the Hypertech Thermomaster it will turn the fans on at 175. That chip is made to use with a 160 thermostat. They also make a Strip and Street chip. They claim it adds HP. I had one in my Vette when I bought the car. It ran OK. Of course, if you have many mods you should get a custom tune. I would try it. It should work. It only takes about 10 minutes to change a chip.

You would gain more HP by rolling down the window and hyper ventilating.

We are talking about an 86 here, and as far as im aware, the fan is controlled by a switch in the head, so if indeed this is the case, the ECM will have no authority to turn on the fan no matter what chip is in there.

Throw it away and let Alvin at PCMFORLESS.COM program you a custom chip.

Even on a bone stock car, you can gain better idles, a little extra HP from some of the tweaks, smoother power band, etc.

but honestly, with a stock car, don't waste the money on a new chip at all.

I have a Hypertech ThermoMaster chip in my 85. I also have the 160 thermo. It was in the car when I bought it. I would not have purchased it. However, the car runs great and runs at 170 all day long in the summer. With Borla exhaust and a K&N open air lid and a 4 plus 3 it runs very strong. I doubt the chip provides any HP gain but it sure runs well and runs nice and cool. I drove it to Carlisle and it ran nice and cool even in 95 degree heat. I'm not changing anything

I have the Thermomaster and 160 Powerstat in my car also. My fans do not come on any sooner than they did before I installed those items.

I wouldn't spend $200.00 on one but if you got one for free why not use it? They work OK.

They do lock the converter up a little earlier (I used the thermomaster/160 also. Performance wise, no difference bad or good.
