Default High Flow Cat, or no cat?

My 87 is bone stock from the motor through original (25,000 mile) cat. I have MidAmerica "stinger pipes" (no mufflers) to the exhaust tips. By adding a high flow, or test pipe (for off road use only) would it be significantly louder?? Will it add HP? Run cooler?

You will see a nice gain on an L98 by either eliminating the cats or by going with highflow cats. If you get high flow cats it will be MUCH quieter than no cats at all. From what I read the cats are a larger factor in loudness than the mufflers are.

Good luck

I personally would go with high flow cats to take some of the edge off the exhaust system. It also helps to keep the raw fuel smell out of the car, and its easier to pass inspection,... if you have that problem in your state.

But i will admit, I have Heddman Headers leading into 2 1/2 in mandrel bent pipe, which lead to high flow cats, an Xpipe and out of 2 magnaflow wide open mufflers, and it is QUIET for the most part. I think the cats may have taken alot of the noise away from the mufflers.

Depends if you have inspections or not.

Our city doesn't so I have NO cats.
The least restrictions the better.

I removed my precats by sleeving the front Y pipe. I replaced the main cat with a high flow Carsound unit and kept the air hooked up. It did help performance and it is somewhat louder.

altering the exhaust on a vette isn't always the greatest idea.. everyone that knows my car loves it till they have to sit in it for more than a rip around the block.. i gutted my cats cause one plugged but i want to go to long tubes when i can afford it.. but i will be putting cats back on it.. don't do something that you won't be able to take back without spending more money.. taking your cat out is one thing but if you already have an aftermarket exhaust it gets to be quite loud..

Not to hijack the thread but I do have a serious quiestion. Say you have no cats. You get pulled over and the cop thinks somethings weird with your exaust so loud or wants to be an ***, and looks under your car to discover no mufflers and no cats. What would you do and what would happen to you? Jail time? What if you PAYED a muffler shop to do the illegal exaust system for you. Who would be in trouble and would you and the shop be sentanced in prision?

Depends on the state. In CA they will execute you on the spot and send KGB agents to gather up your friends and family to live forever in torture camps.

In most other states they will leave the emissions stuff to the inspection shops, which in most cases will not check if your car is older than 1996.

If your car is insanely loud and belligerent then you might get a ticket from a ******** cop.

Really, it depends on the state on how bad the smog police are.

Also, no jailtime. You will get a ticket and, worst case scenario, need to prove to the judge that you had your exhaust corrected. Sometimes you just pay a fine and keep them on.

Depends on where you are. Around here they could care less. My Harley is 5 times louder than the Vette and they don't even turn their heads.
